LUMI

LUMI (Large Unified Modern Infrastructure) is one of the pan-European pre-exascale supercomputers, and one of the most efficient supercomputers globally. It is a joint investment between the EuroHPC JU and eleven member states Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and Switzerland, where CSC, IT Center for Science, coordinates the effort.

HPC Architecture Description

  • HPE Cray EX supercomputer.
  • The Linpack performance of LUMI-G is 379,7 Pflop/s.
  • The GPU partition consists of 2978 nodes, each node with one 64-core AMD Trento CPU and four AMD MI250X GPUs. A total of 11 912 AMD GPUs.
  • Each MI250X GPU consists of two compute dies, each with 110 compute units each.
  • In addition to the GPUs in LUMI there is another partition (LUMI-C) using CPU-only nodes, featuring 64-core 3rd-generation AMD EPYC™ CPUs, and between 256 GB and 1024 GB of memory. There are 2,048 dual-socket CPU nodes in total. A total of 4096 AMD Milan CPUs (over 262 000 CPU cores).
  • Nvidia A40 GPUs for visualization.
  • LUMI’s storage system consists of three components. First, there is a 10-petabyte all-flash Lustre system for short-term fast access. Next, there is a longer-term, more traditional 80-petabyte Lustre system based on mechanical hard drives and third a 30 petabytes of Ceph-based object storage.
  • Cray Slingshot interconnect of 200 Gbit/s.

Access

To access LUMI, user needs to be a member of a project that has been granted resources on LUMI. The LUMI consortium countries have different policies for accessing LUMI. An overview of the access policies is provided on the LUMI Supercomputer Get Started page. In general, a Resource Allocator (RA) must create a project and invite the Principal Investigator (PI), i.e. the lead researcher, to the project.
